holiday

wanted to say something about the past couple national holidays over here -- queens day, memorial day, liberation (wouldnt that be nice) day... well liberation day - day u.s. and allied forces liberated netherlands from nazi occupation - netherlands was neutral (of course) in the great war. on tv they had the queen and prime minister speaking, it was in dutch so who knows what they were saying but it was preceeded by a kenyan acrobatic troupe jumping through fire hoops. after his speech, the prime minister passes a torch back to a kenyan, who proceeds to eat the fire. yeah. then ali b - the morrocan hip pop star (in pierce celtics jersey, and every color of those armbands that stand for peace, love, stop hunger, fight aids etc.), performs with his surinamese r&b singer sidekick and bosnian drummer as little dutch girls and their parents cheer them on. it was deep. that night i went to a special liberation day concert in the hague - "daughters of soul", simone (nina simone's daughter), indira khan (chaka khan's daughter - fire!), joyce kennedy (more fire), lalah hathaway (donny's daughter), nona hendrix (like 60 in leather pants), and this woman something St. Pierre from Family Stand who organized the show -- she was pretty dope, performed pregnant - she lives here now and will be having half-dutch 'daughter of soul' soon. yes quite a night.

so queens day, or rather orange day. queens birthday, everybody dresses in orange - monarchy for last couple 100 years has been house of Orange.. anyway - its a country wide carnival. by far my favorate night/day since ive been here. begins the night before (queens night) and most festivity goes on in hague.. stages set up all over the city, parties spilling out of every bar. you just walk around drinking beer going from stage to stage watching different shows. most memorable was getting thrown about in mosh pit watching dutch reggae band - splendid - that was the name of the band -- and pretty much how i felt:-). the next day, got up and went to amsterdam -- a city wide carnival.. imagine ny streets closed off from 23rd st to delancey for a sprawling carnival. it was incredible, on every street there were stages, or people performing in windows, DJs, regular folks are allowed to sell things out of their attics on the street, there was a two a-side street soccer game set up outside my fave record store (sorry fat beats - got biggie live in london lp there), food stalls, rides, bungy jumping (!!), all kinds of shit, and so many people and it never felt claustrophobic.. finally it was the amsterdam they told me bout.. so open, free, happy. it was also first time i saw so many white and brown people together and there was a feeling of comraderie. yeah, it was a happy day - not quite utopia:), but happy - for a day:). and it's of course amsterdamage, so you could walk around with your beer and/or splif.. it was great. happy birthday to the queen. she has actually made it a royal imperative to promote multi-culturalism. i appreciate the gesture/sentiment lets see what it means in practice. i could have done without the fire-eating kenyan acrobats. that shit was crazy.

coming home june 6. miss you all. very much. xx
